Camel trekking in In dune landscapes of the Sahara
On our traditional caravan tours, you hike with the Akabar-Sahara Treks team – nomads and their dromedaries – through the varied dune landscape in the south of Morocco. Hiking to the rhythm of the caravan, you will enjoy the silence, forget everyday life and experience the timelessness of the desert.
Hafid Benyachou will plan your desired tour with you, taking into account your preferences, such as spending a longer part of the tour in the dunes, visiting nomadic families or your fitness level. The Akabar – Sahara Treks team offers long tours from 6 to 15 days for optimal relaxation. Hafid and his team are not only your guides, but also show you the flora and fauna of the Sahara and let you participate in the culture of the Berber nomads with their numerous stories.
Let yourself be inspired, get involved in the unknown!
Here is our 6-day trekking tour, which takes place exclusively in the dune landscapes of the Moroccan Sahara:
Our six-day trek is an amazing trip across different desert landscapes, including the huge Erg sand dunes, the rocky Hamada plains and peaceful desert oases. This kind of tour, which is almost all dunes, can only be booked from the middle of October to the beginning of April, as hiking in dunes is hotter than other parts of the Sahara, like the black desert mountains and oases.
This six-day trip will help you relax and unwind by taking you on a peaceful, solitary hike through the Sahara. You will have the chance to experience nomadic desert trekking. You will see different desert landscapes, try delicious traditional food and sleep in wild Morocco under the stars or in our tents. This once-in-a-lifetime adventure is a unique mix of hiking, camel riding and getting to know the local culture. It will take you to different dunes in the south of Morocco. As you walk, you will discover the secrets of the Sahara, experience the nomadic way of life, and enjoy a truly peaceful desert environment.
This adventure is more than just a trek. It is also a deep cultural immersion. You will have the chance to live like the nomads, learning their ancient skills—such as baking bread in the sand—and understanding how they survive in one of the harshest environments on earth. The trek is also a great way to experience the peace of the Sahara, as you sleep under the starry sky in our traditional desert camp, far from the noise and distractions of modern life. Every day, the team sets up the tents in a new, beautiful spot in the dunes.
Day 1: M’Hamid to Rass N’khal Dunes– finding our rhythm
After packing up our camels, we start our Sahara trek towards the wild desert and the big dunes of Sahara. It will not take long to become immersed in the quiet solitude of the Sahara. We will soon take a break and enjoy our lunch in the shadow of a swaying palm tree at the end of the oasis around M’Hamid. In the afternoon, we will cross the dried-out riverbed of the Draa and walk through the palm groves. The first night is spent in Rass N’khal.
Day 2: The Mysterious dunes of Erg Sidi Naji – Exploring the Heart of the Sahara
After a solid breakfast, we continue our Sahara trek in the picturesque landscape of Azmaila, a region with a long history between the mountains and the foothills of the Erg Zeher dune field. Discover old stories and ruins of castles in the desert along ancient caravan routes. Lunch in the shade of a desert tree, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the dunes. After lunch, we will carry on exploring the Sahara and its special beauty until we get to the amazing dunes of Sidi Naji.
Day 3: The singing dunes of Erg Zahar – connect to the Sahara
From the highest dunes in the region, Erg Zahar, we trek further into the heart of the desert. This sea of sand dunes is spacious and offers a splendid view over the entire dry Drâa river. You will feel the deep, healing solitude here in the heart of the desert. We end our camel trek in the late afternoon and set up our tents. We finish our camel trek in the late afternoon and set up our tents. You can walk up to the top of the highest dunes to enjoy the view and watch the amazing desert sunset.
Day 4: The Special dunes of Erg Smar – Desert thoughts and impressions
The desert camel trek continues on its way heading for Erg Smar where we set up our daily camp. We will cross dry riverbeds and the desert landscape, passing through beautiful desert scenery. We will stop near a well in the desert to water our camels and get water for the kitchen. After lunch, we will carry on to Erg Smara. There, we will put up our tents and have a traditional nomadic dinner at a campfire.
Day 5: The Majestic dunes of Erg Chigaga – swim in the Great Dunes
We keep going on our trek until we reach the impressive dunes of Erg Chegaga. These dunes are the highest in southern Morocco and are 80 and 100 metres high (Wikipedia). Climb the tallest dune for great views of the Sahara and Bani Mountains. We will put our tents up on the dunes, in places that are not often visited by tourists. This will help us to avoid any noise or disturbance to the peace and quiet.
Day 6: Erg Chigaga to Zagora – Desert Experience Reward
The last trekking day leads us across the Hamada du Draa, a rocky desert of volcanic black stones. After we finish lunch and say goodbye to our team, a 4×4 vehicle will pick us up and take us on a different beautiful route to Zagora. We will spend the night and have dinner in a beautiful Riad in Zagora.

Hikes in the varied rock and stone desert of Jebel Bani:
You will hike along ancient caravan and shepherd trails across the high plateau of the Jebel Bani mountain range with its gorges, rock formations and gravel plains. Along the way, you will encounter oases with water basins, palm trees and other plants. You will discover ancient, long-abandoned settlements and admire rock paintings and engravings. Time and again, you will encounter nomadic families with their herds.

It is advisable to spend a day or two in Zagora after a trek. This will give you time to reflect on your desert experiences, relax in a hammam, visit the authentic market (Wednesdays and Sundays) and browse the many shops (Amezrou and Zagora).
